The role of numerical simulations in the development of innovative and sustainable powertrains is constantly growing thank to their capabilities to significantly reduce the calibration efforts and to point out possible synergies among different technologies. In such a framework, this paper describes the development of a fully physical 1D engine model to support the design and calibration of the innovative highly efficient spark ignition engine of the PHOENICE EU H2020 project. The availability of a reliable simulation platform is crucial to achieve the project target of 47% indicating peak efficiency, by synergetically exploiting the combination of innovative in-cylinder charge motion, Miller cycle with high compression ratio, lean mixture with cooled EGR and electrified turbocharger. Particular attention was paved to the development of a combustion model capable to predict the engine burn rates in highly diluted conditions as well as the risk of abnormal combustion phenomena such as knock and misfire. The developed 1D model was firstly used to identify the optimal combination of engine design and calibration parameters under steady state conditions throughout its whole operating map. Finally, a set of preliminary experimental measurements carried out on the first engine prototype was used to assess the reliability of the developed engine digital twin.
