Study of Li-ion Battery Cells at low Temperatures during Charging and the Importance of Precondition

Alexander Meister, P3 group GmbH

With new technologies come new challenges. The presented P3 study provides a comprehensive explanation from cell to pack level perspective on the limitations and challenges of the fast-charging behavior of batteries especially at low temperatures. The topic of this presentation will consequently be to discuss the opportunities for automotive OEMs and battery pack designers to improve the fast-charging capabilities of their battery packs. Moreover, a focus point of the presentation will be to provide P3’s view on how to overcome these challenges and improve efficiency and customer experience during a charging stop with their electric vehicle, for example in winter. In this context, the fast-charging capability of the battery is highly dependent on a suitable battery cell chemistry as well as proper preconditioning of the entire battery system. The presentation will explain the electrochemical effects at these low temperatures, which are also validated by self-conducted tests. For a holistic and comprehensive investigation of this phenomenon, a comparison at system level (vehicle) was also carried out. The presentation concludes with the key findings from these experiments and shows the main implications for the fast-charging capability of batteries and how this can be improved.
