The New Porsche Taycan: Augmented Range or Enhanced Performance? The Choice is Yours..

Francesca Cogotti, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG

The Taycan, Porsche`s first fully electric sedan, in production since 2019, has undoubtedly been a huge success. The car was produced in five versions, Base, 4S, GTS, Turbo and Turbo S comprising two shapes, Sport Limousine and Sport Turismo respectively Cross Turismo. Aerodynamically, the Taycan Turbo Sport Limousine achieved the best performance, starting with a drag value of 0.22, and hence best in class for 2019. Concurrently the Taycan Base had a drag value of 0.24, the Taycan 4S of 0.23 and the Taycan Turbo S of 0.26. Due to WLTP rules, nowadays the vehicle certification phase represents a major effort in terms of wind tunnel testing time needed to certify the drag deltas between each combined rim and tire configuration. This large quantity of measurements, showed a surprisingly high spread in drag, of up 45 counts and formed the basis for a successful pre-development project, which led to new and clear guidelines for achieving efficient wheels (rims and tires). Thanks to the new Porsche Wheel Strategy and our newly acquired know-how on rims and tires, the all new Taycan, which was launched on the market at the beginning of 2023, can achieve a minimum drag value of 0.22 in all Sport Limousine versions. Concurrently performance remains a crucial, strong selling point for Porsche. The achieved improvements are not therefore only limited to the wheels. Porsche developed on a new derivative, which enabled the Taycan Turbo S to achieve GT Car Level performance.
