The product carbon footprint can be reduced significantly by using alternative materials. However, these materials need to withstand the harsh environmental conditions in the field, so they need to pass automotive test standards. Recycled plastics and renewable feedstocks are sources that allow not only to reduce the carbon footprint but also to fulfil upcoming legal requirements such as the plastic recycling rate of at least 25 % in the “Directive on end-of-life vehicles” of the European Commission. The presentation shows the possibilities to implement different solutions such as caster oil based polyurethane for engine air filters, recyclate materials and bio-based filter media impregnation to lower the crude oil demand during production. By comparing the product carbon footprint and crude oil based raw materials the advantages of the different, technical alternatives are compared in a clear and transparent way. For a quick and robust carbon footprint calculation, an automated process based on the EN ISO 14040 was developed and will be highlighted in the presentation. The product carbon footprint can be assessed by using data from SAP, IMDS etc. and combining it with a material carbon footprint database. Further evolution of the approach is planned to include production and logistic data to provide a cradle to gate LCA. The process is aligned with automotive initiatives such as CatenaX and the FAAS (Forum on Automotive Aftermarket Sustainability).
