Dynamically reconfigurable intelligent Sensors in service-based Automotive Architectures

Lennard Hettich, IAS, Universität Stuttgart

The German automotive industry is currently facing huge challenges. On the one hand, it is operating in a saturated market with declining sales figures due to longer vehicle operating times. On the other hand, it has to meet the expectations of customers with regard to the growing requirements for intelligent driving functions. In sales markets with high saturation and increasing vehicle operating times, the need for new business models to maintain competitiveness is becoming increasingly apparent. The vehicle must be viewed as a software-defined platform that is no longer sold as a one-off, but can be continuously adapted to growing customer requirements during its lifetime by adding new driving functions. Intelligent vehicle sensor technology as the key to these functions must also grow in terms of hardware and software during its lifetime. Due to their signal orientation, the currently dominating vehicle architectures have a strong coupling of their components, which limits the expandability of existing vehicles. In this paper, we will present a concept for a service-oriented software and E/E architecture designed for upgradeability, in which loosely coupled services are enabled to interact flexibly. The main contribution will be a new architecture concept for intelligent sensors, which can be seamlessly integrated into the service-oriented architecture and enables dynamic adaptability, reconfigurability and linkability of sensor hardware and software.
