From Cell Production to Pack Assembly: Handling Solutions for Battery Systems

Eda Gökcimen, J. Schmalz GmbH

Vacuum components from Schmalz meet the challenging requirements of the automotive industry, are used in all areas of the battery production, from the automated cell production, to the pack assembly. This presentation will show various solutions for material handling across all process steps, starting from handling of sensitive electrodes to large and heavy battery packs. For handling the sensitive electrodes, the grippers must above all be gentle on the workpieces. It must be ensured that the workpieces are not sucked into the gripper by an excessively high volume flow and thus deformed or damaged. Another criterion is the electrolyte resistance of the suction pads. Residues of the corrosive liquid can remain on the surface even after filling. Here, the material EPDM offers a suitable solution. For module assembly Form-flexible gripper solutions are extremely important. The pouch cells must be gripped without deformation and handled gently. In this process, customer-specific vacuum grippers are used to safely pick up and positioning of pouch cells in various formats. Battery modules must be placed in the pack with high precision. This is where the customized complete gripper solutions from Schmalz help for safe handling of large structured battery modules and the complete battery. Ergonomic operating unit with display allows single-handed operation and maximum control and and safety functions ensure that excessively heavy workpieces cannot be positioned incorrectly.
