The author introduces a process, that is based on an in-house development, which enables CFD Simulation Engineers to automatically convert their PowerFLOW-PowerTHERM coupled aero-thermal simulation into an Abaqus structural simulation including a fatigue analysis with FE-Safe. Structural simulation and fatigue analysis are using the results of the thermal simulation as their boundary conditions. In a classical workflow there is a need to create separate meshes and models for the aero-thermal and the structural simulations and the transfer of boundary condition data is often a manual process. The similar meshing requirements in finite element thermal and structural simulations present the possibility to eliminate the step of manually creating a separate structural mesh. On top of that, the process creates the input file for the structural simulation, and transfers the boundary condition data from the thermal results into the structural model. As a final step the simulation execution and the fatigue analysis are carried out. With this automation process the time of creating the mesh and parametrizing the model for structural simulations are greatly reduced and the possibility of user errors is also lowered.
