5 Minute Pitch: A new Measurement Method of Piston Friction Force

Takanori Suzuki, SOKEN Inc.

To develop a new low friction method of engine piston, a new floating liner measurement equipment was developed. With the equipment, piston friction force under actual engine operating conditions can be evaluated across a wide range of engine speeds. The key features of the equipment are follows; (1) implementation of two new configuration (a dual-liner structure to suppress thermal stress errors caused by combustion temperature, and a both-side support structure of liner to avoid mechanical resonance noise) and (2) introduction of new noise cancellation method of liner noise, utilizing vibration sensors on both sides of the dual liner and its supports. By simultaneously measuring piston behavior, which is a source of friction force, this equipment enables highly repeatable measurement of piston friction force (FMEP 3σ < 0.5 kPa) up to 4000 r/min. Using this equipment, it was confirmed that increasing the crank offset reduces piston friction force up to 4000 r/min.
