5 Minute Pitch: Virtual Car Model for the Integration of Digital and AI-based Solutions in Pre-Development

Micciche Eduardo Esteban, Mercedes-Benz AG / TU Darmstadt

In a constantly changing and evolving environment, traditional car manufacturers must adapt to new challenges posed by emerging technologies and competitors. This situation characterizes the current state of the German automotive industry. These challenges significantly influence the early phases of the car pre-development process, where shorter development cycles demand the integration of advanced solutions such as new digital frameworks or approaches based on Artificial Intelligence (AI). Incorporating these technologies at the earliest stages of vehicle development has the potential to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in the realization of new concepts. This paper proposes a novel approach for redefining the pre-development process through the systematic definition of a centralized global data management system built around a virtual car model. The approach addresses the current gap in code-based vehicle definitions beyond conventional Computer-Aided Design (CAD) frameworks by enabling numerical representations of the vehicle body, dimensional chain analysis, and automated generation of vehicle packaging layouts. Further exploration of the kinematic relationships among internal components allows comprehensive modeling of vehicle architectures, creating an environment that supports the implementation of digital and AI-based solutions. Initial assumptions, implications, and potential benefits are discussed, offering a new perspective on pre-development and its role in accelerating innovation within the automotive development process chain.
