The Dual-Mode injector offers homogeneous or deliberately stratified mixture for-mation by defined pressure ratios and needle stroke targeting low pressure gas in-jection systems. The Coandã effect ensures these functions. This newly created degree of freedom "heterogeneity" enables even better control of known phenomena such as pre-ignition, knocking, ignitability and nitrogen oxide formation. CFD simulations underline the engine results and at the same time repre-sent further improvements in terms of mean pressure and pollutant reduction. Ma-jor applications are combustion engines in natural gas or hydrogen direct injection operation, designed for commercial vehicles. The paper also shows a comparison with already established injection processes in terms of application effort, cost/benefit ratio and durability under the influence of hydrogen.
