The Hybrid Powertrain of the New 911 Carrera GTS

Markus Baumann, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche Aktiengesellschaft

Each generation of the Porsche 911 creates its own fascination. Porsche is continuously and carefully developing its icon with the famous number sequence. The new 911 proves this by introducing a technical milestone into the world of Porsche sports cars: the principle of the performance hybrid drive. The new T-Hybrid in the 911 Carrera GTS models is particularly light and can be integrated into the existing 911 architecture. This concept is based on multiple experiences from motorsport with the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, 918 Spyder or the 919 Hybrid. A lightweight drive unit was developed specifically for the Porsche 911 T-Hybrid with an exceptionally high spread between suitability for everyday use and use on the racetrack. It consists of an electric exhaust gas turbocharger (eTurbo), a compact and lightweight high-voltage battery, efficient power electronics, a newly developed 3.6-liter boxer engine and a reinforced 8-speed dual clutch transmission (PDK) with an integrated electric motor. Newly developed operating strategies for the perfect interaction of these components give the T-Hybrid an excellent balance of high performance and efficiency with low weight.
