The FKFS is an independent institute and provides research and development services for the international automotive industry.


To this end, it operates various highly specialized test facilities and test vehicles, including several wind tunnels, Europe's largest driving simulator at a research facility, a powertrain test bench for hybrid and conventional vehicles, and numerous engine test benches. In-house developed measurement and testing methods enable the institute to solve complex and challenging tasks. Many years of experience in the development and application of simulation tools complement the range of services.


Around 180 highly qualified and dedicated employees work on research and development projects in the fields of vehicle drives, automotive engineering, mechatronics and electromobility. Founded in 1930, the foundation cooperates closely with the Institute for Combustion Engines and Automotive Engineering at the University of Stuttgart.

Das GreenTeam Uni Stuttgart e.V. wurde im Oktober 2009 gegründet und nimmt seitdem erfolgreich an der Formula Student teil, einem weltweit renommierten Konstruktionswettbewerb für Studierende. Das Team besteht aktuell aus 58 Studierenden verschiedenster Fachrichtungen und Nationalitäten, die Jahr für Jahr mit großem Engagement einen innovativen Prototypen-Batterieelektrischen Rennwagen entwickeln, fertigen und testen.
Ermöglicht werden die Projekte durch großzügige Zuwendungen der Sponsoren und Unterstützern. Seit 2010 ist das Stuttgarter-Team ununterbrochen in den Top 10 der Weltrangliste der Elektro-Rennwagen vertreten und belegt derzeit sogar den ersten Platz.

Im Jahr 2022 erreichten sie einen bemerkenswerten Meilenstein, als sie den Weltrekord für die schnellste Beschleunigung von 0 auf 100 km/h in nur 1,461 Sekunden aufstellten.
Darüber hinaus wurden sie im selben Jahr zum vierten Mal Deutscher Meister und absolvierten in diesem Jahr mit vier Siegen in fünf Rennen Ihre erfolgreichste Saison.

InnovationsCampus Mobilität der Zukunft

The transport systems and production techniques of the future need to be sustainable and efficient. This will require breakthrough technologies – from innovative vehicle drives to versatile production processes. The goal of the InnovationCampus Future Mobility (ICM) is to shape this change. In the ICM, the University of Stuttgart is combining its world class research and innovation teams with those of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) to develop new technologies quickly and flexibly, testing new approaches, and creating the basis for a wide range of innovations.

 

Beginning in 2019, the ICM now has more than 300 researchers involved in over 100 research projects, and 50 research institutes are working on electric motors without rare earths, innovative manufacturing technologies, and self-learning software systems for vehicles. The ICM is one of Germany’s largest initiatives on transport and production methods of the future. Solutions being developed at the ICM show that economic success and ecological responsibility are by no means mutually exclusive but can even complement each other.

Rennteam Uni Stuttgart e.V.

Das Rennteam Uni Stuttgart e.V. ist ein studentischer Verein und ein Formula Student Racing Team der Universität Stuttgart, das seit seinem Debüt im Jahre 2006 bereits zum sechsten Mal die Weltrangliste des Formula Student Combustion Wettbewerbs anführt. In dieser Saison wechselten insgesamt 39 Studentinnen und Studenten unterschiedlicher Studienfachrichtungen den Hörsaal gegen die Rennteam-Werkstatt, um die Lehrinhalte ihres Studiums, um spannende praktische Erfahrungen in Bereichen der Fahrzeugentwicklung und -montage, des Produkt- und Projektmanagements sowie des strategischen Managements zu erweitern und die in der Industrie übliche interdisziplinäre Arbeitsweise zu erlernen.

 

Vom ersten Tag an bringt jedes einzelne Teammitglied seine Kreativität sowie sein individuelles, fachspezifisches Know-how in das gemeinsame Projekt ein, um in weniger als zehn Monaten das anfängliche Konzept in ein wettbewerbsfähiges Fahrzeug zu verwandeln. 


Der organisatorische Aufbau des Teams, bestehend aus fünf Subteams und dreiköpfigen Teamleitung, ist durch eine flache hierarchische Struktur geprägt, wodurch ein effizientes Projektmanagement begünstigt wird. Dabei hat jedes Teammitglied ein Jahr lang seine feste Position im Team und lernt auf diese Weise Verantwortung zu übernehmen und mit Termindruck umzugehen. Trotz ihres jungen Alters arbeiten die Studierenden dank ihrer strukturierten Vorgehensweise, auch in Zeiten hoher Arbeitsbelastung, stets auf einem sehr hohen Niveau.


Der Erfolg des Teams wird jedoch nicht nur durch seine Eigenleistung, sondern auch zu einem großen Teil durch die Unterstützung seiner Partner geprägt. Das Projekt wird durch zahlreiche namhafte Unternehmen aus der Wirtschaft sowie Forschungseinrichtungen, wie das FKFS, unterstützt, welche dem Team die Umsetzung seines Ziels, den besten Rennwagen im Formula Student Wettbewerb mit Verbrennungsmotor zu bauen, ermöglichen.

To this effect, it strengthens the Land Baden-Württemberg as an industrial and science centre.
