A key role at AVL for development, integration, calibration/applications & verification of thewhole vehicle respectively the main systems (powertrain & energy storage systems) plays thehighly flexible powertrain and vehicle in the loop (PaViL) test system. Beside the strong trendto virtual testing, there are still lots of development & testing tasks which require the actualHW system. The parallel use of virtual methods on SiL & HiL in combination with PaVil canincrease the total development efficiency significantly. The presentation will show on anspecific example, how AVL uses this kind of special PT test system by multidisciplinedevelopment teams, who are in charge of energy consumption, efficiency, emission, featuretesting incl. functional safety, diagnoses using one UUT on this PaViL to perform theirdevelopment and validation steps in an optimized & efficient way. The joined planning of testsequences and a high degree of automatization of test executions & data processing allowsthe utilization of the UUT & test environment almost 24/7. All of this reduces the need ofprototype vehicles and on top of it, the whole development time is minimized to supportshort “time to market”, which has a very high priority in the dynamic market of e-mobility. Theabove described, requires dedicated processes and methods to coordinate the differentteams. It helps to look at the PaViL not only as particular skill-specific method, but also ascommon part of the used toolchain.
