“Energy and Automotive” – Do We Have Sufficient Electrical Energy?

Ursel Willrett, IAV GmbH

There are many discussions whether the change to renewable energy production will cause temporarily less available energy than the actual demand. Can we afford electric vehicles in addition? Energy suppliers must integrate e-mobility into the smart grid, i.e. effective load management is required. In addition, batteries in the vehicles can be used as intermediate storage. Users expect sufficient and reliable charging points so that they can recharge their electric vehicle anywhere and at any time. For energy suppliers, electric vehicles and charging infrastructure must be integrated into the smart grid, i.e. effective load management is required. In addition, batteries in the vehicles can be used as intermediate storage. Professional solutions depend heavily on regional conditions and the actual demand for charging capacity and energy. Studies with recommendations for expansion are already available. According to these, the energy supply would have to be expanded by a factor of 16 without controlled charging; with controlled charging, an expansion of around 3-5% of the local grid stations would be required. These figures clearly show the potential of a controlled charging system. A communication system that connects all partners in the system supports the implementation of functions for successful grid integration: charging and load management, authorization, payment systems, bidirectional charging, e-roaming and value-added services.
