Impact of Electrification and Digitalization on the Development Methodology and Testing Technology

Electrification is forcing a re-engineering of traditional development processes as well as the associated testing technology and organizational structure. The share between simulation, lab and road testing, but also between Tier 1 and OEM, will be questioned. In addition simulation is used more widely and efficiently and the calibration effort is significantly reduced. Subsystems (motor, battery, fuel cell) are already developed on more sophisticated component test beds with vehicle simulation which leads to an objectification of development results. Digitalization will enable major changes: Artificial Intelligence will accelerate the creation of simulation models and facilitate the re-usability of development results. Cloud-based data management and networking of test systems will drive distributed development and simultaneous engineering. The biggest change is the continuous integration of subsystems on Powertrain Integration Test Systems. Due to the high degree of interdependences and the high importance of thermal management (ThermoLabs) a realistic representation of power, thermal and information flow is mandatory for a realistic substitution of road testing. The efficient work on such integration test system requires broad systems engineering skills. Among others this is expected to reshape the development process and to break up traditional organizational structures.
