Segmented Low Temperature PEM Fuel Cell Stack Model For A Local Cell Analysis During Driving Cycles

Alexandre Ennen, RWTH Aachen University

In this paper, we present a scalable and variable segmented-based simulation model for a low temperature proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack with the capability to display local phenomena in the three directions in space of the cell. The model is designed to simulate both steady-state and dynamic operations including two-phase water flow distribution. Through the segmentation of the model, dynamic discretised simulations are achieved. A large-scale physical modelling of real PEMFCs has been used, whereby a big focus has been set on calculations of gaseous and liquid water flow during transient changes inside of the fuel cell. A simulation of the fuel cell behaviour during driving cycle operation conditions shows the influence of a transient operation. The representation of local phenomena in the fuel cell can also be used to have an improved simulation of degradation inducing effects in the future.
