Solid-State Batteries: Promises, Challenges, and Market Overview

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) are promising alternatives to conventional lithium-ion (LIB) batteries, which use liquid electrolytes. They offer advantages such as higher energy density and improved thermal stability. In conventional cells, the energy density is in the range of 250-300 Wh/Kg and is increased to 400-450 Wh/Kg in SSBs. Furthermore, the higher thermal stability of the SSBs allows tighter packing of the cells in the battery pack. However, the production of SSBs depends on development of solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, excellent electrochemical properties, and appropriate electrode compatibility. The major classes of solid electrolytes are oxides, polymers, and sulfides. Nevertheless, there is still no final candidate that can fulfill all the required properties. Besides, SSBs face challenges related to manufacturing, such as the need for specialized equipment and processes which increases the final costs. FEV battery cell team is involved in four large EU research projects for developing SSBs and the challenges and advantages of each technology would be provided. Additionally, recently, semi-solid-state batteries (SSSBs) have received great attention. They have a small electrolyte content, easy to produce, show improved thermal stability and offer higher energy density (above 300 Wh/kg). FEV cell team is supporting development of these batteries and in this presentation, an overview of the recent SSSBs will be provided.
